Sunday Mystery - The Ghost Writer by Will Jaeger
A police detective turned reporter investigates a string of arsons with the help of a mysterious informant in Will Jaeger’s The Ghost Writer, the first novella in Exter Press’ “First Encounters” series. But even with inside help, this former cop may not have a chance against a firebug armed with super-sophisticated incendiary devices, the likes of which Earth has never seen. Available in all ebook formats, The Ghost Writer combines pulp adventure and science fiction action to create a whole new world of pulp characters and stories.
The Ghost Writer is a successful cross between classic pulp and weird fiction, according to Jim Beard, author of Sgt. Janus, Spirit-Breaker (Airship 27). “Will Jaeger’s got the lingo and the savvy to fill The Ghost Writer with enough pulp atmosphere to make it a top-notch noir thriller–but he doesn’t stop there,” Beard remarked. “He populates it with interesting characters and an alluring sense of the weird that swings the story into new and unknown territory, sort of Sam Spade meets the X-Files.”
Tommy Hancock, publisher of Pro Se Press, gives the The Ghost Writer "Five Tips of Hancock's Hat!" and says the novella has "a healthy dose of the influence of classic pulp adventure tangled madly together with enough mystery and characterization to tantalize a modern audience!"
Author Will Jaeger is a longtime pulp enthusiast and comic fan. “Pulp and comic strip heroes like the Shadow and Flash Gordon sparked my imagination when I was a kid,” Jaeger remarked. “Being able to combine my love of detective stories and science fiction in the ‘First Encounters’ series of novellas is a dream come true.”
Each “First Encounter” novella will introduce new characters and build on the story and situations created in The Ghost Writer to create an entirely new pulp fiction world. “Writing a quarterly series of novellas with all-new characters is going to be a challenge, but I’m keeping my pencils sharp,” Jaeger added. “At his peak, Walter Gibson was writing two novel-length Shadow adventures every month, if not more. I feel his spirit on my shoulder as I write!”
The Ghost Writer is published by Exter Press, publisher of Big Pulp, an all-genre quarterly magazine. A modern version of the classic pulp and popular fiction magazines, each issue of Big Pulp features 200 pages of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, adventure, romance, and horror fiction and poetry, written by the best emerging and established genre writers from around the world.
